2025 – Music and Connection January 30, 2025 13:32
To Our Worldwide Percussion Family,
As we step into 2025, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable resilience of educators, musicians, and the Arts. The past year has presented its share of challenges, yet amidst them, creativity, innovation, and hope continue to flourish. Here in Australia and around the world, economic and social shifts test our resolve, but Music remains an enduring and unifying force.
For more than two decades, I have been privileged to be part of an extraordinary global community of artists and educators. Over this time, Rhythmscape has grown into more than just a platform for musical expression—it has become a bridge connecting cultures, ideas, and people. Each time I hear a Rhythmscape work performed—whether in a concert hall in Europe, a school in North America, or a festival in Asia—I am deeply moved by the reach and impact of our shared passion.
As we embrace the year ahead, again, I pose a simple but profound question to each of you: How can we continue to harness the power of music to build stronger, more connected communities? Throughout history, music has been a force for good—breaking down barriers, inspiring change, and offering solace in difficult times. In an era where division too often dominates, the role of Music in fostering empathy, understanding, and unity has never been more important.
This sense of togetherness does not arise on its own. It requires us to approach one another with kindness, openness, and a willingness to listen. It calls upon us to step into each other’s experiences, even when it is difficult. Through Music, we can create the spaces where this understanding thrives.
Once again, I want to celebrate the places where music and community continue to shine—Nashville (TN, USA), Asheville (NC, USA), Boulder (CO, USA), Portland (OR, USA), Austin (TX, USA), Athens (GA, USA), Munich (Germany), Oslo (Norway), Madrid (Spain), Zurich (Switzerland), Dublin (Ireland), and Paris (France). These cities, like so many others, remind us of the boundless potential of music to uplift and inspire.
Finally, I encourage you to keep in your thoughts all those who bring music to life—the performers, concert organisers, students, teachers, and educators. Their dedication, note by note and bar by bar, continues to shape a world where music is not only heard but deeply felt.
With gratitude and hope,
Gordon Hughes
