Alan Emslie

> go straight to Alan's works <

Alan Emslie has been described by his fellow musicians as a force of energy in the world of music today. His unique skills have enabled him to bridge the gap between diverse styles from progressive rock drumming, world and popular music to the orchestral platform.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 23rd September 1969, Alan experimented with the violin, piano and guitar before realizing that all the dents in the furniture were a sign! While studying music, he worked with all the major orchestras and ensembles on Scotland and began to work in London and Europe, while continuing his strong interest in non-orchestral music. He also began to compose seriously, including his own pieces for timpani, snare drum, drum kit, ethnic percussion and keyboards in his graduation recital.

In 1994/5 he pursued his interest in hand drumming by taking lessons from Paul Clarvis in London and later by travelling to Morocco, where he spent a month with musicians of Essaouria and Marrakech. This was followed up with a trip to Denmark in 1997 to study congas with Birger Sulsbruck and an invitation to work with the Nordic Brass Ensemble in Scandinavia. In between these years, Alan co-founded Sona Coated.

From 1994 to 1999 Alan was principal timpanist of Anima Eterna Symphony Orchestra in Belgium, while also working with Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, The English Concert, The Academy of Ancient Music, London Baroque, The Hannover Band, The Sixteen, La Stagione Frankfurt and extensively at home on timpani, percussion, ethnic percussion and drum kit with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and The Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Alan was invited to become a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in 1998.

In 2001, Alan's first project Soft Monster (with keyboard player Euan Drysdale) released a CD recording entitled Floating. In 2002, Alan embarked on his debut solo CD Alan Emslie - Emotive Bay going on to then become an endorsee of Zildjian cymbals and record two projects for John Irvine.

Alan Emslie's work ranges from Prog/Metal Music (Vocals/Drums/Gtr) through to World Music (Hand Drumming/Multi Wierd Percussion), Orchestral Sessions (Timpani) & Experimental Music (Every instrument you're brain cannot imagine!). Alan is a classically trained percussionist & self taught drummer/vocalist/guitarist who as well as performing with orchestras including Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Freiburg Baroque (Germany), Anima Eterna (Belgium) and Harmonieband (London) amongst others, performs, records & produces his own unique style of Prog/Metal music blended with all of the influences mentioned above & more!
